Hikes in Western Australia

Lake Argyle Bluff Look Out Walk

Distance: 5.75 km

Duration: 1-1.30 hr

Difficulty: Easy/Medium

Equipment: Hiking shoes or running trainers, sunscreen, tripod, water, waste bags, camera, drone Parking: Free parking at the campsite

Lake Argyle straddles the border of Western Australia and the Northern Territory, boasting an awe-inspiring landscape enveloped by rolling hills. The optimal times for embarking on this extraordinary hike are either at sunrise or sunset to avoid the scorching heat. We rose early, just before sunrise, to capture the mesmerizing light and seize the opportunity for some stunning photographs.

The hike itself proved moderately easy, featuring subtle elevation changes, while the added humidity added a touch of challenge. Exercise caution regarding wildlife; we encountered two snakes and kangaroos along the way, emphasizing the importance of keeping dogs on a leash. The panoramic views from the trail are among the most breathtaking I have witnessed in Australia, with the water and hues over the sand cliffs resembling scenes from dreams! For those staying at the campground, as we did, consider checking out their pool. After completing the hike, taking a refreshing dip in the pool proved invigorating.

While the campground is not dog-friendly, there is a grassy fenced area with a tree. I left Alma here, but we could still see each other, and she remained cool in the shade.

Elephant Rock

Distance: 3-5 km

Duration: 45 mins - 1 hr

Difficulty: Hard

Equipment: Hiking shoes or running trainers, sweat towel, camera, backpack, poo bags, drone, lots & lots of water Parking:

Free parking on the side of the road

This hike has to be one of the most challenging we have done, not because of the distance, but because it was ridiculously hot! It was fine when we started the hike, but it just got hotter and more humid as we carried on.

We didn't quite complete it because I was too worried about Alma, and once we saw the view we wanted, we hurried back to the van before running out of water. If you have a 4x4, you could easily cut out around 2-3 km because the bulk of the hike involved walking along the sandy road to ascend up the cliffs.

The walk was straightforward to follow, and we didn't encounter another soul the whole way. We had to take a lot of breaks, and I had to use a considerable amount of water on Alma, keeping her body cool by wetting her. The view was 100% worth it and has to be one of the best views I experienced while hiking here. If we were to do it again, definitely go for sunset or sunrise. We plan to come back one day, complete it again, and spend more time enjoying the view.

Rating: 10/10.
