Queensland

Mahongany, Summit and Powerful Owl Loop
  • Distance Covered: 9 km

  • Time Spent: 2 hours

  • Challenge Level: Moderate

  • Essentials Packed: Trusty hiking shoes, camera, water bottle, day rucksack, sun cream, sunglasses, and a hat

  • Parking: Free at the Summit car park on Sir Samuel Griffith Drive

Our Adventure:

Venturing out early, we set out to conquer the Mahogany Summit and Powerful Owl Loop, a trail already buzzing with eager hikers trying to beat the summer heat. Opting for the Summit car park on Sir Samuel Griffith Drive, we deliberately saved the best parts for the end, starting our journey away from the summit.

The trail winds through enchanting woods, offering numerous paths that could easily lead you astray. Thankful for modern technology, the AllTrails app became our guiding companion, ensuring we didn't miss a beat. Once off the main footpath, a sense of tranquility enveloped us, with only a couple of mountain bikers sharing the hidden trails.

Our path meandered through the woods, leading us to a picturesque stream and waterfall with a viewing platform. Unfortunately, the summer had dried up the water, leaving the stream bed exposed for us to explore rocky terrain and discover charming puddles.

The return journey to the summit was an immersive experience, merging with the main track bustling with foot and paw traffic. Along the way, we stumbled upon a delightful picnic area and a quaint stream, perfect for a leisurely paddle. Finally reaching the summit, we were treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of Brisbane and beyond. To our surprise, a cozy cafe and shop awaited, adding a touch of comfort to our outdoor escapade.

Our Rating: 4/10

While our summer visit missed the full splendor of a flowing stream, we could envision the trail's true beauty in winter after rainfall.

  • Time of Expedition: 1 hour 53 minutes

  • Trail Difficulty: Easy

  • Essentials Carried: Trusty trainers, camera, sun cream, sunglasses, and a hat

  • Starting Point: Convenient carparks in the city

Our Urban Exploration:

Embarking on a delightful 8.5 km stroll through the heart of Brisbane, we opted for the Four Bridges Walk, a city hike that promised both daylight and nighttime views. Timing our hike with the sunset, we were treated to a mesmerizing transformation of the city as it transitioned from day to night, adorned with captivating lights.

The trail was a breeze to follow, winding through the urban landscape. Our exploration centered around South Bank, a vibrant hub with a myriad of activities. Among the highlights were the iconic Brisbane sign against the city skyline, the breathtaking Nepalese Peace Pagoda, and the enchanting fairy trees illuminated with a hundred lights, casting a magical glow over the surroundings. Along the way, we discovered numerous bars and restaurants, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to our urban adventure.

The walk offered a unique perspective of Brisbane, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the lively atmosphere of the city. Despite being a popular route with both locals and their canine companions, the entire walk was on-leash, limiting green areas for Alma, to run and play. Nevertheless, it proved to be an excellent opportunity for her to sniff around and explore.

Our Rating: 7/10

The Four Bridges Walk at dusk showcased the city's dynamic charm, earning a solid 7 on our rating scale.

Our City Odyssey:

Embarking on a refreshing 6.5 km stroll through Brisbane's urban heart, the Kangaroo Point Goodwill Bridge and Story Bridge Loop presented a delightful city loop. For the fitness enthusiasts, it even provides an opportunity to seamlessly connect with the trail above, extending your adventure with an extra bridge.

Choosing the early morning hours to beat the summer heat, a substantial part of our journey led us along the road until we reached the first bridge. Crossing over, the path transformed into walkways and footpaths, bustling with cyclists, runners, and scooters. Vigilance was key as we navigated this busy route, ensuring we kept left and stayed alert.

Following the route was a breeze as it hugged the river, offering scenic views throughout. We discovered a few spots where Alma, our furry companion, could dip her paws and cool down. Leashes were a must for the entire route, but we stumbled upon a charming park where Alma enjoyed some off-leash freedom to sniff and explore.

Although the boardwalk prevented us from completing the full loop, we concluded our journey back in the city, having savored the diverse landscapes and city vibes.

Our Rating: 7/10

The Kangaroo Point Goodwill Bridge and Story Bridge Loop earned a solid 7 on our scale, providing an urban escape filled with energy and riverside charm.
