Canberra City Bridge Loop

Distance: 5.72 km
Duration: 1-1.30hr
Difficulty: Easy
Equipment: Hiking shoes or running trainers, sun cream, water, poop bags
Parking: Free parking on the street between certain times

Embark on a delightful urban adventure with the Canberra City Bridges Loop, covering a distance of 5.72 km and offering a leisurely duration of 1-1.30 hours. The easy-rated hike requires only basic equipment, including hiking shoes or running trainers, sun cream, water, and, for those accompanied by furry friends, poop bags. Take advantage of free street parking within designated hours.

This perfect city hike commences at the remarkable art gallery, leading you on a loop across iconic city bridges before concluding back at the gallery. Our journey began with a visit to the Within Without exhibition, a long-awaited experience that lived up to its reputation. An added bonus was its dog-friendly outdoor setting, adding a layer of enjoyment for all.

Navigating through the heart of Canberra, we explored green spaces along King Edward Terrace, eventually reaching Commonwealth Ave. Crossing the first bridge, we turned right, tracing the waterside path up to Kings Parkland. Our route led us back over Kings Avenue Bridge, passing through the Sculpture Garden before returning to the car. Opting for an evening hike just before sunset allowed us to witness the sun's descent and bask in the mesmerising glow of city lights as night fell.

Overall rating: 7/10

Queanbeyan River Walk

Distance: 19.39 km
Duration: 4-5hrs
Difficulty: Hard
Equipment: Hiking shoes or running trainers, towel, camera, lunch, drag line, poo bags
Parking: Free car park at the start of the walk

Embark on an exhilarating journey with the Queanbeyan River Walk, covering an impressive 19.39 km and offering a challenging duration of 4-5 hours. The trail, rated as hard, necessitates essential equipment including hiking shoes or running trainers, a towel, camera, lunch, drag line, and poo bags. Begin your adventure from the free car park conveniently located at the walk's starting point.

The trail's dog-friendliness was ambiguous, prompting a careful assessment based on signage and consideration for the environment. Despite the lack of explicit "no dogs" signs and the main sign mentioning restrictions only near the dam, we exercised caution, safety, and respect for our surroundings. If attempting this hike with a dog, it's recommended to adopt a similar approach.

The hike unfolds with excitement right from the start, with London Bridge just around 1 km into the walk—a perfect option for those seeking a shorter adventure. Following this, the journey traces a fire trail in a substantial loop, leading back to London Bridge and the car park.

Be prepared for two challenging river crossings during the hike, especially in winter when the water can be bitterly cold. Crossing the river involves a barefoot scramble, adding an adventurous twist to the experience. Additionally, the fire trail transforms into a hilly 4x4 track after the river crossings, offering stunning views despite the challenging terrain.

Overall, this hike offers a unique and captivating experience, earning a commendable rating of 9/10.
