CromerHeighs

Distance: 6.04 km in total
Duration: 1 hr 30 mins
Difficulty: Moderate
Equipment: Hiking shoes or running trainers, camera, sun cream, sunglasses, water, snacks, poo bags
Parking: Free on-road parking at the start of the walk

Embark on a hidden gem of a walk, a mere half-hour drive from Sydney, with the Cromer Heights to Red Hill Loop. Covering a total distance of 6.04 km, this moderate-rated trail offers a delightful duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes. Essential equipment includes hiking shoes or running trainers, a camera to capture the stunning scenery, sun cream, sunglasses, water, snacks to keep energized, and poo bags if accompanied by a furry friend. Begin your adventure with free on-road parking in the residential area that marks the start of the walk.

Commencing in a residential enclave, the hike kicks off with an uphill stretch for the first kilometer. Don't forget to bring a map, as the area boasts numerous intertwining paths. Opting to descend at the first loop proved to be a wise strategy, avoiding an uphill return in the heat and making for a pleasant downhill stroll back to the car.

Reaching the summit rewards you with breathtaking views extending to the ocean. As you follow the path around, another splendid vista unfolds over the rolling hills. Keep in mind that parts of the trail can be wet, especially after rainfall, potentially requiring careful navigation to keep your feet dry.

This walk emerges as an underrated favorite, providing the thrill of elevation without the concern of sudden cliffs—a perfect exploration companion, especially for four-legged friends like Alma.

Blackwattle
Blackwattle Bay, Glebe Foreshore, Anzac Bridge to Darling Harbour

Distance: 8.52 km
Duration: 1 – 2 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Equipment: Hiking shoes or running trainers, sun cream, sunglasses, water
Parking: Paid carparks, paid on-road parking

Explore the vibrant Blackwattle Bay circuit, a local favorite spanning from Sydney Fish Market to Federal Park, with a distance of 8.52 km and an enjoyable duration of 1 to 2 hours. This easy-rated route demands minimal equipment—hiking shoes or running trainers, sun cream, sunglasses, and water. While paid carparks and on-road parking are available, it's essential to note that this popular foreshore can get crowded during peak hours, particularly with off-leash dogs.

Beginning at Sydney Fish Market, the circuit stretches along Glebe's foreshore, offering an off-leash haven for your furry companions. However, given the potential crowding and off-leash nature, it may not be suitable for on-leash reactive or nervous dogs. Consider checking tide times as low tide reveals charming mini-beaches with picturesque views across Sydney Harbour.

Upon reaching Federal Park, additional exploration opportunities unfold. Pet O, located near the park, provides a delightful treat for your pup—Doglato (doggy ice-cream). The nearby Tramsheds, though not dog-friendly indoors, welcomes take-away orders for a post-walk picnic in the park.

Extend your journey to Anzac Bridge and Pyrmont, navigating road works and diversions as needed. Pyrmont's waterfront beckons with parks, cafes, and piers by the water. Giba Park offers a serene off-leash area with a stunning view of the harbor. The morning adventurers can indulge in a hearty breakfast at PPK (Pyrmont Park Kiosk), known for its delicious and reasonably priced offerings, including breakfast donuts and puppuccinos.

Continue your stroll to Darling Harbour, where you can find a variety of dining options and even extend the walk further to the Harbour Bridge and beyond.

Embark on a delightful city hike, a perfect addition to your urban adventures, covering a distance of 7 km with a duration of 1 hour 30 mins to 2 hours. This easy-rated loop demands minimal equipment—hiking shoes or running trainers, sun cream, sunglasses, and water. Convenient city carparks are available for parking.

This city hike unfolds along the picturesque Darling Harbour towards Barangaroo, guiding you along the water with shops, bars, and restaurants on your left. Venture down boat ramps and discover hidden beaches under the trees along Henley Marine Drive. These secluded spots often provide a tranquil setting where Alma can freely paddle in the sea. Keep in mind that the sand can be more like mud, so appropriate footwear is recommended.

Explore the array of parks along the route, including Nield Park, Rodd Park, Timbrell Park, Leichhardt Park, King George Park, and Callan Park. Callan Park, a personal favorite, has recently designated all its fields as off-leash, offering a vast and less crowded space for trick training and exploration.

Mermaid Pools and Tahmoor Canyon Circuit

Distance: 10 km
Duration: 2-3 hrs
Difficulty: Hard
Equipment: Hiking shoes or running trainers, sun cream, water
Parking: Free parking in the car park at the start of the walk

Venturing into this area for the first time, I was astounded by the hidden gem that is the Mermaid Pools and Tahmoor Canyon Circuit. Discovery of this hike through a dog-friendly hiking forum, a testament to the surprises unveiled by this challenge. While Alltrails may not label it as dog-friendly, rest assured, it is.

The trail proved more challenging than anticipated, presenting a terrain of ups, downs, and scrambling to navigate. Maps were indispensable, but the presence of pink and blue ribbons, strategically placed along the route, proved crucial, albeit challenging to track at times—perhaps due to path alterations from flooding. Embarking along the stream and into the canyon, surrounded by towering cliffs, the journey ascended through the woods. A red box, housing a visitor's book and free maps, offered a delightful touch.

The subsequent long loop walk, guided by the map and ribbons, presented incredible views of cascading waterfalls below. This hike, rated 10/10, left a profound impression, compelling a desire to return and explore more of this captivating area soon.

Kiama Coast
Kiama Coast Walk

Distance: 24 km
Duration: 6-7 hrs
Difficulty: Medium
Equipment: Hiking shoes or running trainers, sun cream, water
Parking: Free on-road parking at the end of the walk at Werri Lagoon.

This remarkable coastal trek, although technically beyond Sydney, is a hidden gem just a 2-hour drive south, past Wollongong, right before Jervis Bay. Setting up this walk can be a bit challenging if you're alone. My strategy is to park at the walk's endpoint and arrange a taxi or lift to the starting point. However, things changed recently with local taxis, so I sought assistance from the community. A kind local named Emma generously offered to pick us up and drop us off at the other end, showcasing the generosity of people willing to help without any personal gain. Kudos to Emma!

As you commence the walk, take a moment to explore the beautiful view, especially along the water banks overlooking the sandbank. I prefer to split the journey into two halves. The first leg involves walking to Kiama along grassy high embankments, with a straightforward path. Some beaches may require detours due to pet restrictions, but the alternatives offer splendid views. Kiama presents a delightful interlude with its local shops, including a dog boutique with a fantastic array of healthy dehydrated treats. Lunch in the local pub or chippy is a must.

The second half leads to numerous beaches and my favorite segment, where grassy hills meet the ocean. Reminiscent of the UK, it's a lush, green stretch with minimal foot traffic, providing a safe, off-leash space for Alma. The rocky and wild beaches along the coast are stunning, and the final gem, just before Werri Lagoon, features a hidden beach with a vast rock pool—perfect for safe dog swimming. Be cautious at the end, as crossing the lagoon depends on the tide; swimming or paddling might be necessary.

Distance: 10.45 km
Duration: 2-3 hrs
Difficulty: Medium
Equipment: Hiking shoes or running trainers, sun cream, water, trousers (not shorts for our route)
Parking: Free parking in the car park at the start of the walk

Embark on a captivating journey through nature with the allure of a stunning waterfall! The initial part of the route is easily navigable with the Alltrails app. However, the second half poses more challenges. The path appears to fade away, and in some sections, it seems like a path was improvised by someone eager to walk alongside the stream.

Interestingly, there is an alternative trail that would have been more straightforward, especially where the streams diverge. If I were to revisit this walk, I'd undoubtedly opt for the alternate path over the one we initially took. Nevertheless, the experience was enriched by enchanting woodland views, resulting in some memorable photographs.

Prepare to be awestruck by the breathtaking views of this hike, making the extended journey up the fire trail absolutely worthwhile. Navigating to the hike can be a tad perplexing, especially during the last leg of the drive, where a dirt track, albeit suitable for a 2WD vehicle, is adorned with a sign proclaiming "private property." Fear not, as this sign is only applicable if you deviate from the main dirt track. Driving along the dirt track to the layby at the hike's starting point is perfectly acceptable. The fire trail leading to the lookout is well-marked, and the lookout itself is situated within an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Area.

Keep an eye out for a small white sign denoting the layby parking. From there, it's a straightforward walk to the lookout. Once you arrive, relish the incredible panoramic views spanning the National Park and the valley from the state forest. While the trail suggests continuing along the rocks, our attempt revealed a disappearing path, leading to a challenging scramble through bushes on the cliff's edge. It didn't yield a rewarding view and ventured into the midst of the bushland. Therefore, it's recommended to savor the spectacular view at the outset and forgo the rock continuation.

Duration: 1 hr
Difficulty: Easy
Equipment: Hiking shoes or running trainers, sun cream, water
Parking: Free parking in the car park at the start of the walk

Embark on a delightful beachside hike with this charming 5 km loop near Sydney. Commencing the journey from Belmont Lakeside Holiday Park, we set out to rediscover the wonders of Belmont Beach. The loop offers a perfect balance of a scenic stroll, spanning sandy shores and lush landscapes, and moments of play, paddle, and exploration along the pristine 4x4 beach.

Choosing the evening for our adventure, we were treated to a serene sunset, and the beach, nearly deserted, became our private haven as the sun dipped below the horizon. The return walk along the road, however, should be approached with caution, especially after dark due to the absence of street lights.

Distance: 2.70 km (10.45 km in total)
Duration: 1 hr
Difficulty: Easy
Equipment: Hiking shoes or running trainers, sun cream, water
Parking: Free on-road parking

This hike, while falling short of our expectations due to its incompatibility with dogs, presented some redeeming qualities that warrant its mention. Despite the National Park entrance restrictions for dogs, the 2.70 km stretch to the beach showcased picturesque scenery, making it a valuable contribution to our challenge. The beach itself, though seemingly less dog-friendly, was encountered by some locals walking their dogs.

In an attempt to salvage our journey, we explored the option of approaching the trail from the other end. Unfortunately, this too was met with signs prohibiting dogs. To prevent others from encountering a similar situation, I promptly reported the discrepancy on the Alltrails app, hoping for a timely update.

After the disappointment of not being able to complete the Ghosties Beach Caves hike, we stumbled upon the Tuggerah Lake Shore Shared Path—a 20 km trail nearby. The initial stretch, adorned with the beauty of the lake, unfolded on a straightforward tarmac path leading directly toward the Entrance.

Around the 5.5 km mark, both Alma and I found ourselves somewhat fatigued, as the scenery remained relatively consistent throughout—ample views of the lake and glimpses of residential houses but not much more.

Parking: Free parking in the car park

Embark on a hidden gem of a hike just outside Sydney, offering the perfect loop walk for an enjoyable day out with your pup. Begin your adventure by parking at the free car park to the left of Hinkler Park on Aitken Ave. The journey unfolds along Manly Creek, providing an ideal spot for a paddle or swim, with shallow sandbanks appearing at the right tide for some pup zoomies.

From the main road, make your way to Freshwater Beach, and although the beach itself isn't dog-friendly, you can stroll along the left-hand side footpath and head up to Duke Kahanamoku Park. Here, enjoy exploring the cliffs with Alma on a long line, and venture down to the boardwalk for breathtaking ocean views. As you reach Flora and Ritchie Roberts Reserve, the path transforms into an off-leash area. This section is perfect for training, with fewer crowds to distract.

Follow the path to the dog-friendly beach at the end, located past the sand dune and dipping down into the lagoon. Proceed along the lagoon, and join the loop path on the other side, ensuring you stick to the path as indicated by signs. Head towards Adam Street Reserve and Curl Curl Lagoon, following the footpath through various parks. Adam Street Reserve is an off-leash area, transitioning to on-leash further along. Utilize Alma's long leash in these on-leash sections, usually not too busy for her to explore freely.

After a brief residential street walk along Harbord Road towards Nolan Reserve, follow the map to find your way. For your convenience, find our map below outlining the route we took.

Embark on an extraordinary beach adventure starting from the car park off Mitchell Road, right by the beach entrance. For summer, it's 10 am to 4 pm with restrictions. If you wish to explore during these hours, consider reversing the walk, heading straight to Cronulla Sand Dune and then to Boat Harbour.

From the private part of the beach, which is off-leash friendly, stroll to the end path of Cronulla Beach, and down to the serene Boat Harbour. At the end of Boat Harbour, discover a beautiful sheltered beach perfect for paddling and explore the fascinating rock pools.
